Summary
In this monograph shells have been studied in paleoenvironmental borings, in anthropic accumulations and to date archaeological sites.
The exploitation of the seashells of two
Neolithic sites,
The seashells eaten are mainly rocky species (limpets Patella sp., thick topped shell Osilinus lineatus and abalone Haliotis tuberculata). This observation is not only dependant on the accessible paleoenvironment. It shows that in spite of an access to a large diversity of marine environments and of species, the rocky coasts had been mainly exploited. The more easily access of the rocky seashells and the important yield of the limpets could have affected this activity. The gathering of these seashells also shows an activity with slight difficulties. In fact; the mainly species are intertidal ones. They could have been gathered all the year and daily regardless of the intensity of the tide for limpets and thick topped shells. The gathering of the abalone requires large tides.
The shells used for the conception of ornament are mainly common edible cockle Cerastoderma edule, purple Nucella lapillus and mussel Mytilus edulis. These beads point at a high specialized activity perhaps with an important economic impact.
An other activity linked to the use of the shells can be brought up: the use of shells as tool. This use is confirmed only for a shell of bittersweet (Glycymeris sp.) observed at Ponthezières. This indication is too restrictive to conclude from which kinds of activity this shell participated. This sign permit us to do the connection with the Ecuissière site. The first shells discovered at the Ecuissière have not been consumed and could correspond with failed shells.
In conclusion, the composition of seashells and the activities in which they are involved shows that the marine environment has got an important impact on the daily of these coastal human populations. The variations observed can correspond with an adaptation of their paleoenvironment but not only. They can also be linked to the specialisation of some activities.
