    2. La fonction carré est la fonction f définie sur R par f(x)=x2.

  2. Sens de variation
    3. Proposition -
    La fonction x → x2 définie sur R est strictement décroissante sur ]-∞,0[ et strictement croissante sur ]0,+∞[.

    Démonstration -
    Pour x > y réels, on a x2-y2=(x-y)(x+y). Donc x2-y2 est du signe de x+y.

    On obtient alors le tableau de variation suivant :
